[Moon 16, Mid Morning, Open] Taking Stock

[Asahina Narumi]

Narumi's shift being in full swing, she is taking stock of the inventory in the sick bay. It can only help to know the sick bay like the back of your hand and that was one of the priestesses goals. She studies the location of all herbs, gauzes, ointments and anything else that she will need to perform her duties properly. She navigates the small room, very busybody-like trying to figure out footing and positioning. She could only imagine that in rough seas such knowledge would be indispensable.

"One, two, puts me..." *mumble mumble*

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

Rinzuki, for her part, lays on her stomach atop the surgical table, her feet kicking slowly in the air above her as she reads her romance novel.

There wasn't really enough room for the both of them to be digging around in the supplies anyways, right?

[Asahina Narumi]

The Asahina glances at the Unicorn for a moment every once in a while as she's going through her practice movements. It could be she's trying to determine the number of steps between the table and each cabinet or she might just be trying to figure out what she's reading. Regardless, she doesn't mention either to the Unicorn.

She does speak up, however, "Iuchi-san? Would it be too forward of me to ask where about you come from in Unicorn lands?" Obviously making an attempt to get to know the woman better.

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

"Originally, or recently?" She doesn't look up from her book for a few more seconds, but then lowers it as she turns to regard her coworker. "My father relocated us when I was but a young girl, so I have only the vaguest of ideas with regards to which province I grew up in. It's rather common in a Clan that values travel as much as my own."

[Asahina Narumi]

"You have travelled a lot then? That sounds like fun. I imagine that it is something you enjoy, rather than just being part of your duties," there is a friendly smile on her face with her reply. She is paying most of her attention to Rinzuki while still stepping about the small space, getting a feel for it.

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

"Children of the Four Winds and all." Rinzuki returns the smile with one of her own. "There is a certain charm in visiting the various lands of the Empire, but I never developed a fondness for traveling in and of itself. Too many nights spent sleeping on the hard ground or eating cold rice."

[Asahina Narumi]

The Asahina slowly side-steps around the table, allowing her fingers to brush lightly against cabinets. She keeps her eyes and attention towards the conversation at hand, leaving her peripherals to take care of her as best they can.

"I haven't slept on the ground since I was a little girl," she says with a bit of nostalgia, but continues her query. "So have you travelled in support of military action or for religious purposes?"

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

"I was most recently attached to the Baraunghar, but only after the assault upon the capital." She watches the Crane move about the room in mild curiosity. "That being said, I believe that most of my duties would likely be considered military service, though I tend to consider myself more of an advisor than a warrior."

[Asahina Narumi]

"That is the army that's made up of mostly shugenja is it not?" The Crane had heard the stories of Chagatai and Toshi Ranbo from a cousin who had been there. She couldn't name the other armies of the Unicorn, but that one she had heard of. She decided asking about the history of the unit might be sensitive and instead asks about her duties within it.

"You are more of an advisor? Are you a diviner like myself or a tactician? Or both..." she asks. The ship finds itself swaying gently for a moment and the Asahina's feet become planted as she feels the motion.

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

"It is," Rinzuki replies with a nod. "Or at least, it was. The casualty rate among the Baraunghar for that particular military action was somewhere around ninety percent, so..."

"But yes, an advisor. More specifically, a political advisor, though I do, of course, have military experience." As the ship sways, Rinzuki calmly reaches down and grabs the edge of the table to keep her from rolling off of it.

[Asahina Narumi]

"It's taking me a bit to get used to that, hopefully I'll be able to walk through those small swells and sways soon," the Asahina says with a slightly embarrassed smile.

"Political advisor? So you interact in the courts and take part in negotiations wherever your unit goes? That sounds like an important duty."

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

"You're planting your feet too much." Rinzuki smirks in amusement as she kicks her feet in the air. "As the captain was so kind as to point out, you just have to treat the sea as if it were a man and just roll along with its movements. Personally, I'm of the opinion that women should be more active than that, but it's still rather good advice. I haven't been seasick once."

She nods at Narumi's question. "In theory, yes. At the moment, however, my unit consists of myself, a rather annoying and ill-tempered horse, and two Shinjo bushi who are on leave to tend to their families slain by the recent barbarian attacks. Ninety percent casualty rate, remember."

A shrug.

"As such, my recent duties have been ones of advisement to various officers of the Unicorn."

[Asahina Narumi]

"Not planting the feet for stability is such an odd concept to me. Jumping and climbing require strong footing but the flexibility and fluidity required to follow the pitch of a deck feels... abnormal," the Asahina replies. "I'm going to end up on the floor more than a few times the first time we find a storm for sure." Narumi displays a light-hearted acceptance of her fate in her tone.

She turns her topic back to the topic of Rinzuki, "So you decided to apply for the Ninth Legion for a more stable assignment, or just curiosity?"

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

"I am attempting to claim a position as liason between the Baraunghar and the Imperial Navy. Unfortunately, that requires serving in the Imperial Navy." She smirks in amusement. "If we do encounter a storm, I promise not to laugh as you tumble about the room."

[Asahina Narumi]

"Don't worry about hurting my feelings, I'm pretty resilient in that regard," Naarumi says, with a grin. "Such a posting would be quite an honor. I wish you well in that endeavor."

"By the way, I figure I should say something early so that it doesn't cause unnecessary issues later. I am not able to call the kami to aid in healing. My healing ability stems purely from medical knowledge."

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

Rinzuki raises an eyebrow in surprise. "You are a priest though, are you not? It is only a matter of not having the correct prayer?"

[Asahina Narumi]

"It is... strange, I will admit to that. I merely learned different prayers from my sensei at his suggestion. Most of which were for defense and divination. I never questioned his judgement and it was probably never foreseen that I would be serving on naval vessels either. Now I have no library access to receive it. Also, my skill with medicine and ability to speak with the kami were also never my true strengths," she explains.

"I've always been a capable diviner. But a year before my gempukku I found that I have a gift that occasionally grants me much stronger insights into the future," Narumi says, all the while continuing to memorize the layout of the medical stock.

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

"Mmm..." Rinzuki sits up and stretches her arms out behind her. "I would not claim to no better than your sensei, with regards to which prayers you should or should not know...but it would certainly be beneficial to the Empire if you had access to magical healing, neh?"

At mention of her divining abilities, the Unicorn smiles playfully. "I assume that there are no looming tragedies on the horizon of destiny? I should rather like to know if we were sailing into an unfavorable destiny."

[Asahina Narumi]

"I've gotten no foreboding images during our trip so far, so I believe we should be fine for a while. I have not been able to read the stars in a few nights and the coins have been rather neutral as well," Narumi confirms the lack of omens, good or bad, that she has not received.

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

"That's reassuring, at least."

Rinzuki leans back, propping herself up with her arms as she watches Narumi work.

"So what about yourself?"
