"Ooh!" Seiko almost squealed with delight at that thought. "That's good! But what about getting cold spray in your face? Can your horses do that?"

"Of course! You can run through a shallow stream or run through the snow!" Qulan, too, replied with excitement.

"I've done both of those before."

It was only the gloom of the surrounding night that stopped Seiko from laughing out-loud. But she could not prevent a slight giggle.

"Okay, what about the thrill of danger, of not knowing if you can avoid the reefs?" she asked, although the Kaiu was getting a idea already of what that involved.

She stopped, and her face fell for a moment.

"-ders," she concluded, a bit lamely. Her voice had lost its enthusiasm.

"Hmm?" The excitement in Qulan's voice dropped as well. Replaced by concern.

"Something wrong, Kaiu-san?"

"Sorry, Shinjo-san," Seiko replied. "I just got to thinking about boarders, and that... lead to other thoughts."

She gave a small shiver, as if she had gotten a sudden chill.

"H-have you seen combat before, Shinjo-san?"

"Actually... No." Qulan rubbed the back of her neck bashfully. "I am rather sheltered as you said..."

"But you are a bushi, right?" she asked, noting the lack of a scroll satchel on Qulan.

The Kaiu seemed to be hinting at something, leading the conversation a certain direction.

Qulan's interest in Seiko's passion effectively distracted the Kaiu from her earlier distress. She smiled winningly and nodded.

"It... well... my uncle ran a shipyard. It was my dream to build ships, to run the shipyard after him. Hopefully, when I am doing serving with the Ninth, I can bring back my dream."
