"It looks like...a cloud...?" She squints her eyes and leans forward a bit, bracing herself against the edge of the crow's nest. "Maybe a storm of some sort?"

"Hmm..." the man muttered, turning his seefar occulum carefully from left to right. "It doesn't seem like cloud to me. Something dark. Maybe a storm? Or then the Jade Sun is sinking way too early."

"Nothing so pleasant."

O-washi, who had been examining Xiao Hua's odd device with fascination, focused his gaze on the horizon. His tone, usually carrying at least a touch of humor, was now grim.

"That, children of Shinjo, is the Sea of Shadows."

"Oh, so that's the Shadowlands," she says in a rather calm tone. "We're sailing around it, though?"

"Oh." Rinzuki takes this information in a much calmer manner than might have been expected. "What is the proper protocol for such a thing?"

"No casting, double guard, and if you notice anyting odd on ship, you tell someone, FAST."

Realizing he might be making them nervous, O-washi tried for a smile and only made it about half-way. "It won't be for too long but it's the only way through."

"No casting?" Rinzuki considers this for a moment. "Does that include meishido? It does not call upon the kami in the same manner as traditional prayers."

Now it was the Isawa who had to pause and consider. "I will leave that to your discretion." His glance moved to include both of the Iuchi. "I know nothing of that art except that it exists and so cannot offer you good council. I would still refrain if you can, just in case."

"Now, then."

Back to business was best, to O-washi's thinking.

"You might be wondering just how a scout gets information to his Captain, especially in a hurry during a storm or a battle or the like."

He pulled the wood whistle from his waistband and passed it to the nearest Unicorn.

"There're several different signals, all easy enough to learn, that we use to make that easier. With practice, you'll be able to pipe down about ships approaching, bad weather, reefs or other sea trash, man overboard, and other such sights." He paused to consider the matter. "I think there are, oh, three dozen patterns all told. It's the rhythm and tempo that tell the message...have any of you ever done anything musical? It helps..."

We are doing WHAT. Luckily, the man was prudent enough to keep his thoughts to himself.

"Aye, Sir. I play a flute. Not well to perform at courts, but..." he told the huge Phoenix.

"Then it'll be easy to keep the rhythm. Listen up."

Taking the whistle back, O-washi demonstrated the different calls. They were, for anyone with rhythm, rather easy to tell apart (Sailing/INT 10). "Who wants to try?"

Despite her claim of inexperience with whistles, Rinzuki manages to do pretty well for herself.

Havng actually a played an instrument that required the coordinated use of lungs and lips, the shugneja did pretty well, when his turn to try came.

Pleased, O-washi nodded. "Just so. I expect you lot to be able to learn those well enough to respond to them by the time you take full duties so if you need me to repeat them, you just let me know. Now then."

His tone grew more serious.

"As you can see, we're quite high up here. Fact of the matter is, it's a dangerous place to be...high winds can blow you down, storms can call the Thunderer, and at times of battle an enemy may well aim for the eyes of the ship. There are four ways off of this platform. Any of you have any ideas there?"
