I think I'll finish the poem and post it soonish. I have a few verses done.
Yes, of course there is more about Seiko. I don't think Tomoe was asking for details, heh. Seiko returning Sugita's crude mannerisms is what both made her fun and put her solidly as friend. The storm scene was weird for him. It felt like an 8 year old's play at first kiss, though mixed with 'teenage boy sees girl' syndrome. In the end, Sugita thinks Seiko has great, yet odd ways of having fun. Which is cool. He liked that. It made her fun to be around and somewhat distanced at the same time. If she had chided him for his crude manners, Seiko would have made Sugita feel more comfortable. Can't really say Sugita treated her all that well by any decent standards. The bouncing between cute shy girl and forward playful girl also confused Sugita. He wanted to know more about her, but he was too shy (yes) to ask about things directly. Maybe pin down who she really was as a person. Tried to ask Musasha in a long shot to see if they knew each other. Maybe he'd get the courage over time.
Sugita is crude because after his gempukku he was put on a ship that had a crew of 6. They became very close. Proper etiquette melted away with a small group that spent years together with little time on shore. The captain let them get away with most anything. The one Samurai girl on board always punched Sugita with a smile on her face when he playfully hit on her. They both knew it meant nothing. The other guys would throw crude jokes back and forth. They'd exchange knowing winks. Lots of things that a proper Samurai would turn a blind eye to. Old habits die hard.
While on shore leave, Sugita remained the same. He'd insult the wrong people. Then the Captain would have to bring punishment to appease those insulted. This left Sugita with more than a dozen lash scars on his back. Sometimes fights would break out. The last person he fought on shore was an Imperial Legion recruiter. Sugita got his ass handed to him of course. But the recruiter thought he had spunk. Then he found out Sugita had skill too. Decided to send Sugita off to a training ship to learn discipline. Hence... There he was.
Sugita was born in a small village outside of a watchtower near the mouth of the River of Gold. The place was far from the nearest city of Mura Sabishii Toshi. He mostly played with heimin as a small child. Sugita having an accent as often as not was intentional. Country life subdued over the years. When he grew some, he went to a minor dojo in the city. His Kakita sensei soon transferred him to a Daidoji sensei who taught seamanship. That is where Sugita remained for the last couple years before his gempukku. The truth is, the Kakita sensei thought Sugita unworthy, and best put out to sea where he could shame few.
Even Sugita's parents thought little of him. Until they got the orders for him to be sent to the Imperial Legions. That surprised them.
