As far as she knew, most peasants didn't follow quite the same coming of age ceremony as samurai. "Did you chose that name?"

"Mother said that my father picked it out for me," Amaya said, feeling like she should be shrugging and instead keeping her shoulders still. It was a fairly personal question, but if a samurai wanted the answer, then that's what a samurai was going to get. She wasn't too sure about peasant naming conventions either, but she did know where she got her name.

"I...I didn't mean to m-make you uncomfortable." Worry tinges her voice and she seems a little flustered.

"O-one of my last crew members ca-called herself Am-maya...and yo-you're the only two I-I've met."

She blinked. Well, it wasn't like it was an uncommon name, now was it? She coughed slightly and shook her head. "Shiba-sama's fine, Shiba-sama. Not my place to tell folks what questions they can ask or things they ought be doing," she said, coughing again and shrugging. "I'm here to do what I'm told, and when there's orders I hop to 'em. If anything feels different, I'll get used to it soon enough. That's my job."

The tool's just gotta get used to a new master's hand. That's all.

Matter-of-fact. Not squirrely like those damn servants at... what was that port's name? Well, regardless... they were awful...

"Well... um... you know... if you want s-someone to talk to...ever..."

While it seemed out of character to offer such a thing, Nozomi distinctly remembered spending almost all of one voyage sharing concerns and worries with the carved Ningyo that had been housed in sick bay, because she hadn't found the courage to talk to many of the crew. It was her first time on an unfamiliar ship, that trip, and she was pretty sure they'd forgotten about her until someone needed an arm set due to falling from the rigging. And that had included the heimin.

She blinked. Kami, she was certain that the whole ship had lurched there for a moment and a hand gripped the wood at her side, knuckles white. She might not have been squirrely as in unwilling to answer questions in detail as some peasants could be, but the idea of ... talking to a samurai? Kami-besotten hell, the woman could cut her head off on the shore and pay a fine, if that. And worse, she was almost sure those fiery robes meant priest, and not just any priest. No, no, no, not like the nice fat monk who comes to town and teaches the kids about Shinsei priest. She was one of those 'i'm going to blow you up to kingdom come by summoning the spirits of wind, fire and all that good stuff. and turn you into a newt in your next life, mwuhahaha' kind of priests. Those guys were scary as spit, and it dawned on Amaya that those milky eyes certainly matched somebody who talked to kami, and who the kami talked back.

Oh kami... a damned shugahoozit actually wants to talk to me? Do I dare even say no? She could turn me into a newt and cook me in a stewpot for kami's sake!

"If Shiba-sama would wish it," she said thickly, the gravel in her voice there definitely. This is going to be a long voyage if I've got crazy, milk-eyed world destroyers trying to talk to me. How many priests we got on this ship anyhow?

Her shyness overtakes her once again. "I wo-won't be offe-ffended if you d-don't." Scooting to the edge of the platform, her small feet easily find purchase on the only real path down from the crow's nest.

Mumbling, Nozomi begins to prepare to descend, soft words easily lost in the rustle of her cotton kimono and the ocassional wind."Some... can be n-nice."

"Of course, Shiba-sama. I... perhaps... we will speak again," she said her gruff voice sounding not entirely sure how to respond to that. It wasn't like she generally got a choice in the matter. She bobbed her head and then realized that she had been left alone on the loft. She blinked, confused for a moment and made a signal below as the other woman started to descend. After a moment and retying of her anchor, she settled in to what seemed to be her current duty. Someone else would have to take the rigging if they needed a person in the crow's nest after all.

... Bloody... now I'm more confused than before.

It was an easy job for small feet to find places for support, they didn't need much room. Descending rather quickly, Nozomi glaces back up at the Crow's Nest only once before she feels the solidity of the deck beneath her. A moment later and she had already found herself some menial task to take care of that required very little company.

"Looong voyage," she muttered to herself. Avoiding the Shiba would be next to impossible. Sure, it was a crowded boat, but at the same time, could she honestly risk offending the priest? She might really hex her. Rubbing her forehead, she focused on watching those green patches for shoals. Those at least she understood, and howevermuch she hated being up here, she could deal with that much better.
