She blinked. Kami, she was certain that the whole ship had lurched there for a moment and a hand gripped the wood at her side, knuckles white. She might not have been squirrely as in unwilling to answer questions in detail as some peasants could be, but the idea of ... talking to a samurai? Kami-besotten hell, the woman could cut her head off on the shore and pay a fine, if that. And worse, she was almost sure those fiery robes meant priest, and not just any priest. No, no, no, not like the nice fat monk who comes to town and teaches the kids about Shinsei priest. She was one of those 'i'm going to blow you up to kingdom come by summoning the spirits of wind, fire and all that good stuff. and turn you into a newt in your next life, mwuhahaha' kind of priests. Those guys were scary as spit, and it dawned on Amaya that those milky eyes certainly matched somebody who talked to kami, and who the kami talked back.
Oh kami... a damned shugahoozit actually wants to talk to me? Do I dare even say no? She could turn me into a newt and cook me in a stewpot for kami's sake!
"If Shiba-sama would wish it," she said thickly, the gravel in her voice there definitely. This is going to be a long voyage if I've got crazy, milk-eyed world destroyers trying to talk to me. How many priests we got on this ship anyhow?
