Day 1, Late Evening/Midnight, OPEN Cleaning before Bed

[Bayushi Hoshi]

Hoshi took a slow sip of her drink at that, masking a frown through that motion. "Mm. That's something. Well. I've been practising my luck with fishing this morning and had some luck, maybe I could be so lucky to catch a jellyfish tomorrow."

[Asahina Narumi]

"I would hope that the omens were telling us about something less frivolous than fishing, but they can be quite frivolous at times," she says with a smile. "Perhaps well come upon another ship, or perhaps the captain will run us through some exercises."

[Bayushi Hoshi]

Hoshi shrugged with one hand, "I only mentioned fishing because I like to limit my imagination when it comes to the will of the Fortunes. You're right to mention that they could take on many forms. Seeing the captain ever since his vigil at the helm would be interesting in itself."

[Asahina Narumi]

"He is teaching some navigation courses," Narumi says. "I did not realize how much it relied on the stars." She looks to Nobuyoshi who had also been drawn into the lesson. "What did you think of the Captain's lesson Bayushi-sama?" she said, curiously with a smile.

[Bayushi Nobuyoshi]

The Scorpion ponders the question.

"A chance to learn from your commanding officer is always a good opportunity." he states simply.

"There are worse ways to spend one's time in the evening than watching the stars, are there not? he asks.

[Asahina Narumi]

"It was nice. To have a duty where you spend your time watching the stars, I didn't suspect there'd be one on the ship," she says happily. "But the rest of the lessons will likely be much more difficult for me. Not that I am likely to get a duty other than medic, but I still would like to learn how to navigate. It never hurts to have backups." Narumi is smiling, showing her perpetually happy self.

[Bayushi Nobuyoshi]

Nobuyoshi nods.

"A samurai must be proficient with more than one thing." Nobuyoshi agrees. "Perhaps Asahina-san will pick up a new art form on this trip as well? Cooking and sewing must be done, but doing them in the Crane aesthetically appealing way is certainly preferable to Crab practicality."

[Asahina Narumi]

"Ahh, perhaps. If the crew is fortunate, I will have plenty of free time while I am on duty," Narumi replies. He doesn't think sewing is a bad idea either. I wonder why Rinzuki was displeased with that suggestion...

"This is a training mission so I look forward to learning as much as I can," she says with a smile.

[Bayushi Hoshi]

Hoshi finished the remainder of her sake and perked up with a question. "Oh? Asahina-san is considering picking up cooking and sewing? I wish there was something I could do to help, but there's no a shortage of personnel on board who are proficient in both. Participants anyway."

[Asahina Narumi]

"Perhaps, but for now I will be focusing on the navigation lessons that the Captain is covering. I fear I am a bit underdeveloped in the area of proper sailing skills," Narumi replies.

"That and continuing education on mundane medicine use. With this being a training mission I expect there may be more than a few twisted ankles and bruises from those less familiar with sailing," she replies.

[Bayushi Hoshi]

It doesn't take divination to know that there's more than a few on board like that. Hoshi flipped over her cup and laid it on top of the table, done with her sake even if more was offered tonight on the outside chance. "In some places, they're considered fortune signs. I hope your peers are as enthused about tending to our...badges of experience."

[Asahina Narumi]

"It is one of the few ways I can be useful onboard, so I am happy to serve in such a manner," Narumi says.

She takes the last sip from her cup but still holds it in her lap.

"It's the very least I can do to make the lifes of the samurai who protect the ship more comfortable," she continues with a smile.

[Bayushi Hoshi]

"We're lucky to have you with us for what you're here for and what you're willing to do beyond. You must be used to the situation of tending to many troubling souls to be this tolerant...or brave." She smiled sheepishly.

[Asahina Narumi]

"It isn't so much that I've gotten used to it as I've always enjoyed helping others," Narumi replies. "It grants a sense of fulfillment, as each life touched in a positive way means others are more likely to learn from that example. One has the duty to serve the empire, but by serving other members of the empire you have the potential to touch on and improve their own service. Out of all of the tenets of Bushido, compassion speaks to me most strongly."

[Bayushi Nobuyoshi]

Nobuyoshi turns his attention back to his weapon and armor maintenance, letting the two samurai-ko discuss what they like.

[Bayushi Hoshi]

Uhm...mm...Really?

"An ethic that I've been raised on too Asahina-san, but one I've found myself out of practice in adulthood. The obligations of a samurai are complicated. Mm, yet...I always believed that the notion of reach out to others was more in line with Courtesy."

[Asahina Narumi]

"Yes, Courtesy of course is the tenet of respecting others, including one's adversaries. But Compassion is the tenet that teaches not respect but living for others. My life's work as a priestess has been devoted to serving for the good of others. Being Courteous is a part of that, but it is not the driving force behind my actions," she replies with a smile.

[Bayushi Hoshi]

Hoshi smiled back, "Living for others? That is something that seems closer to that of Courage Asahina-san. Courage hardly befitted only for battle, but devoting oneself to a cause selflessly. I always thought Compassion was closer of a tenant where one must acknowledge their lessers, while Courtesy acknowledges your equals."

[Asahina Narumi]

"Is not Courage what teaches one to live and act in the face of fear and threat of loss? But Compassion is choosing to act to the benefit of all. Often times many of these tenets can be a part of the same action can they not? The difference I see is that a Compassionate act would be akin to a samurai helping a farmer who's cart is stuck in the mud. Sure, that takes Courtesy as well, but with Courtesy alone that samurai could choose not to help and allow the farmer to face his own challenge by himself."

[Bayushi Hoshi]

Hoshi gave a few idle taps on the table. "Yet a farmer repays his place in society with his stock and produce who feed both the people and the samurai of the land. Such a samurai would only see a loss if they allowed a farmer to suffer so. I thought Compassion was more synonymous with generosity, where one would part their own medicine to an ailing bandit."
