As the skiff maneuvered through the debris field, those keen of eye would notice that some of the wood was scorched and marked by fire. Some, but not all. A few of the larger pieces bore painted symbols of a markedly foreign look, bright colors faded by sun and salt water. There was something distinctly off about the whole mess and it wasn't long before the realization struck; there should have been more bodies.
It was the first thing that those of a more military persuasion noticed.
Although there were bright scraps of cloth here and there amongst the broken masts, crates and barrels, there was an amazing lack of bodies. Especially considering there was enough wood to make at least a half dozen ships. It was obvious that the ships had been attacked, their attackers striking swiftly and decisively so that none could escape. Accounting for the currents and the drift the attack had occurred no more than three days ago and no less than a day.

These were not merchant ships. The few dead bloated bodies that did float by were incomplete, missing legs, arms, and heads. Whoever their attackers were had taken prisoners, but then, why would they destroy the ships? Regardless of their reasoning, this meant that the attackers had a base nearby to off-load their prisoners...?
