I don't think there is any connection between the two. To be honest, I'm not actually sure it IS produced by The Mind's Eye - that's what I got from Wikipedia. What I do know is that my older brother got a six-cassette audio-story version the Hobbit*, and whomever they got to do the voice of Smaug was incredible.
