Moon 12, Afternoon, Foredeck: I spy (LION)

by Isawa O-Washi
This day, for a change, Isawa O-washi had further subdivided his group by having the word passed along with the morning meal. Having seen to the Crane just after lunch, it was now the Lion's turn.

He waited by the Mainmast, clad in even less clothing than usual, which was saying something. His vest was gone and his usual hakama had been replaced with simple jinbei which were cut close to his heavily-muscled thighs, the better to avoid catching in the rigging for the lesson he'd planned. Beside him stood one of the heimen, an older man who's broad grin was mostly lacking in teeth. He, unlike the ashigaru from the two prior lessons, was unarmed, encumbered only with a small hourglass and a large wooden whistle. O-washi was listening to the older man with an amused look as the heimen made some comment about the Crane or other, making broad gestures with his hands while still keeping hold of that with which he'd been intrusted.

Jishaku was the first to arrive and gave the gunso a deep bow. "Good afternoon Isawa-gunso." Today he wore the new Imperial legion issued trousers and had tied his hair back. He positively radiates enthusiasm for the days lesson which was about to begin.

Hikaru arrives a moment later and bows very shallowly.

"Greetings Isawa-gunso, Akodo-san."

Jishaku gives his clanmate a respectful bow. "Ikoma-sama, good day to you cousin."

O-washi, who'd greeted the Akodo cordially, paused and raised a brow at the lack of respect from the Ikoma. Sensing a potential issue brewing, he decided to address it before it grew to a full squall. "Got a problem with your back there, Ikoma-san? I know that hauling those who've gone over can be a bit of a hassle and all but you should have come down to the sick bay if it was so bad you can't even bow properly."

I hope you are injured cousin. The gunso is a man worthy of your respect. Remembering what the Ikoma had said about the other new recruits the previous day Jishaku was not so sure it wasn't a snub. Still, he just engaged polite ignorance mode and took a look around to see if he could figure out what the day's training would entail.

The peasant, who knew better than to watch a Lion get chewed out, saw Jishaku looking and surreptitiously pointed upward before going back to finding the whistle in his hand to be utterly fascinating.

Giving the man a faint nod Jishaku looks upward to see if the giant eagle is up there again today. He looks at the rigging and wonders if the Ikoma is also a handy climber.

The eagle was, as a matter of fact...currently eating a large silver fish of some sort.

Hikaru's lip twitched, and it almost looked as if a smile briefly crossed his face.

"Moshi-gunso's frame does little to show her true strength. However I think stretching since being here has done the trick Gunso-sama. I thank you for your concern."

Hikaru bows and this time it is a more respectful depth this time. After he rises he says

"I look forward to your instruction today Isawa-gunso."

Apparently appeased, O-washi simply nodded and let the matter drop, moving on to the lesson. "I hope it'll be one that you'll find suitably interesting, given it's one of the things I've seen a number of Ikoma excel at. Simply put, we're going to cover scouting."

He pointed skyward to the Nest on the mainmast.

"Either of you have much practice at climbing? A mast's a trickier thing than a tree because it moves but the general technique's the same. If not, we can rig a harness easily enough."

"I had a go on the rigging when I first came aboard gunso. Met that fine eagle up there." He grins. "Didn't take the time to inspect the crow's nest though." Jishaku looks like he's itching to get going but waits for the order like a proper soldier.

Hikaru's lip twitched upwards again at the mention of his families ability in regards to scouting.

"I know the basics of climbing but truthfully i cannot say I am proficient at it."

"Fair enough, Ikoma-san, we'll let Akodo-san give it a go first then." Grinning, O-washi turned to regard the eager Lion. "Sensuifu mentioned you prowling around his territory...lucky he's eating now or he might have a few things to say about you going back up. Go on, then, so we can get on to the lesson proper."

Jishaku nods and leaps up onto the rigging. "I hope Sensuifu gets used to me quickly then gunso." The climb is pretty easy for this Lion, though he is careful not to get in the eagle's way as he makes his way up the ropes and into the Crow's Nest. He looks around at the spectacular view before turning his gaze back down to watch Hikaru.

Amuro remains quiet and polite to the young gunso and to his pride of compatriots. He listens and observes for now.

"Next?"

O-washi didn't care which, just that they all got up safely.

Hikaru scampers up to the top and takes a look around.

"Nice view from up here eh Akodo-san?"

"Quite marvellous Ikoma-sama, I rather like it up here. I was just inspecting this shrine to Suitengu-no-kami...some interesting decorations." He gestures towards the collection of objects that have been dedicated to the fortune of the sea.
