Pre-Game Activity: Getting Sealegs

Postby Rixy » Wed Aug 24, 2011 2:20 am

In every group of any size, it is basic instinct to establish a pecking order within that group. Within a group of new, sometimes untested sailors of equal rank, the easiest means by which to do so is to judge the fitness of one's shipmates for duty. On a ship, the easiest way by which to do so isn't to watch skills at sail and rigging, nor abilities at reading tide and stars and charts, nor even ability to outswim or outfight your fellows...

...it's who turns greenest around the gills and for how long.

As a Pre-Game activity for approved characters only , players have the opportunity to enter into a shipwide 'contest' of sorts. Participation is optional...anyone who doesn't wish to take part will simply be assumed to be 'average'. Should you wish your character to participate, please make a thread in this forum with your character's name for your rolls. As part of Day 1, results will be posted...please feel free to haze your fellows accordingly because rest assured the officers certainly will ;).

Rules!

For each pre-game IC (PGIC) day, a character may make one roll to try and get their sealegs. This gives a total of 7 possible rolls that can be made at any point up through 11:59PM CST Sept. 4th. For every PGIC, you simply need to make Sailing (Earth) roll, on which you may choose to spend Void. Each post should be it's own reply within your thread for ease of judging by GMs. Those with Jurojin's or Suitengu's Blessing get a +5 on this roll. Conversely, those with Jurojin or Suitengu's Curse get a -5. Compare your results to the following chart:

0-10: Landlubber. You are so ill you can barely leave your berth, much less do anything useful. Take off one success from your total.
10-20: Greenhorn. While certainly not feeling your best, you manage to do your Duty, though you feed the fishes a time or two in the course of the day.
20-30: Seasoned. You may have passing moments where you have to stop for a deep breath or two or stumble on a swell but by and large it's business as usual. Counts as two successes.
30+: Saltwater for Blood. You move around the deck as if you were born on a boat and have no issues whatsoever. Counts as three successes.

To be fully acclimated to life at sea, you must make three rolls of 15+ (a success). These need not be consecutive.

GM's will examine who got their sea legs earliest and latest and with the best/worst rolls and will award some flavor text accordingly. Doing your posts IC is encouraged as a way to get into your PC's head and show what they are like to your fellow Players but is by no means required.

Results!

The swiftest to gain sealegs was....Daidoji Fuichi!

The sickest bastard you ever saw was...Toritaka Hoitsu!

For his (surprising) resilience, Daidoji-san gains +.3 Glory (Born Sailor) and a pearl netsuke honoring Suitengu along with a bit of sea-green ribbon to hang it with.

For his (again, surprising given he's a Crab) devoted attempt to chum every possible shark around the ship for leagues, Toritaka-san gains +.3 Infamy (So Delicate his Mama Must Have Been A Doji) and a small statue of Jizo-kami, made out of coral.
