Hoshi didn't blink when she saw the Kakita receive his reprimand, nor did she linger to watch the pain, she merely turned her attention elsewhere in the discussion. It'll be interesting to hear how the Asahina answered this one.

Re: [Moon 14, Morning - Crew's Quarters] How to Patch a Ship

Postby Daidoji Fuichi » Sat Sep 03, 2011 3:25 am

Fuichi remained studiously silent through the course of this interesting bout of supposition. His head was killing him again; he'd have to make more of that vile tea. Still, to work with the wood that held this great machine, their Empire in microcosm, together...truly, that would be the finest of gifts. He had only ever worked with ships in drydock, so his experience of emergency patches was nil, but give him a saw, hammer, nails, and a block of time, and no ship could go long unfixed.

Jishaku manages not to grin as the Kakita ends up on his arse. I think I like Moshi-gunso more with every day. He listens to the banter, paying careful attention to the answers that the gunso approves of.

The Ram just watches the conversation quietly from the back, content not to add more to the conversation until asked. He's dealt with some of this first hand and would rather the rest of the crew find new ways to deal with things if they work.

The Kitsuki quietly listens, absorbing all the information he can. Ship maintenance formed a sizable gap in his current knowledge and understanding of life on the sea.

"Excellent, Narumi-san... that pretty much covers that situation," she pauses as the Usagi and the Asahina chatter, listening to their exchange with patience. The woman doesn't say anything to contradict the Crane's information, pointing out flatly when they arrived at an impasse, "Release all of the ones in front of the one that has been set alight. With the wind being what they are, they'll catch eventually."

Kaimenko uses the sharp tip of her knife to work the detail of the face. "Third situation, broken mast, not the main-mast. Suggestions?"

Kaiu Seiko stays silent as she listens. This was familiar to her, but she wanted to make sure that the others answered first. Moshi-sama wanted to shake down the rest of the crew, see if they could do something, think.

She nodded to herself, continuing to watch.

Masamichi strokes his fine moustache if he looks around the room at the others to see if they can guess at the Gunso's desired answer.

The flush disappears with the Moshi's acceptance of her answer, she was not expecting to get it right but assuming that the ship was like a person seemed to work out. I'll have to consider things in medical terms when it comes to ship repair from now on unless told otherwise.

She listens for someone else to answer the question of the mast, believing that amputating a limb that was only holding on by bits of flesh would be the wrong answer here. The masts seem a bit more important that that.

Fuichi inclined his head. "A mast is too large a thing to repair in the middle of a battle, especially during the boarding that's likely to follow losing one. It's probably best to clear away the debris to minimize the possibility of accidents and make arrangements to erect a new mast once the battle is complete."

Zenko looks around to his fellows... "Uhm...making sure no one's underneath it...salvage what you can from it? Sail's probably still attached right? You don't want to do more damage to the ship removing it, then what its already done..."

"In a battle," the Crane speaks up, "you usually have two choices depending on the damage to the mast. If it is still mostly upright, you can support it with ropes along the cracks to keep it up, just remember to trim the sail some on that mast to reduce the strain. If the thing is laying 'cross the deck, its best to get it free so it isn't making the ship list in the fight. After the fight the captian and repair crews can decide to try and recover it." he returns to silence, waiting for Kaimenko to correct or berate him.
