Kaito listened to each of the suggestions in turn he wasn't a big one for talking during lessons and this seemed to be another one of the occasions where he kept his gob shut. As the question was asked about fire he glanced over at the usagi wondering what exactly the man's answer would be.

The Kakita doesn't keep his gob shut. "Is this for discussing practice, or can I just say 'Do our Duty' here too?" Probably not the wisest idea.

Naomi was finishing off on stitching on a chrysanthemum on a uniform when Kaimenko arrived, and she duly placed needle and thread aside to give the gunso her full attention.

She shot a stern glance to the prattling Kakita.

"... Form a bucket-line to bring water to take out the fire, gunso."

The knife was stuck in the chest as the woman rose from her seat. She made her way to Crane and calmly punched him in the face with a look of pure indifference. Kaimenko had a mean right hook (9). The Moshi absently shook out her fist as she stared down at the Kakita, "Congratulations. You have my attention."

"Perhaps your parents didn't see fit to teach you to read, but your orders assigned you to the Half Moon as a trainee, buttercup. That means you are, officially, no better than a bit of turd hanging off a dog's ass until either I or O-washi-san say so," she reminds him with false solicitude. "So, I'm going to ask you to try real hard not to blurt out whatever falls into that empty space between your ears even if you really need the reassurance that you're pretty and well-liked by your fellows. Of course, if that's too hard I can always have you help the ferrets in their nightly hunts."

Her hand pats his bruised face, though it was more like a light slap. "Got that? Good."

"Much better Usagi-san," she turns and moves back to her seat as if nothing happened, "Also a sound suggestion, Naomi-san, save the fact that we don't have a well. You'll have noticed, the lot of you, rain collecting barrels scattered around the ship. If there's a fire, use those. Of course, anyone who can call the water or fire kami are welcome to do what they can in those instances, but we cannot and should not depend on it at all times. For all any of you know, your next assignment will find you on a ship with either no shugenja or you as the sole inheritor of the position. The crew you find now on the Half Moon is not the norm."

Sugita doesn't try dodging beyond the uncontrollable reflexes, and falls to the floor on his knees. A brief grin is displayed when he shakes his senses back, and spits blood. Then he looks up, no humour present. Cuz that'd be pushing too far. "Hai, Moshi-sama. Message received."

Having some courage and a desire to not look completely incompetent though, Sugita pipes up again. "If I might offer an action, Moshi-sama. Sails are a great danger during a fire. If they catch, they can fall and quickly spread the fire around the whole ship. They should be stowed away from the flames quickly, and if they catch, cast them off into the sea."

"And how do you cast the sails off," comes the cold, even question. There were no hints of disgust or scorn in the woman's voice. It was simply how she spoke to everyone when she wasn't being sarcastic.

Narumi was not accustomed to corporal punishment and the sudden strike suprised her more than the Kakita. She flushed with surprise and confusion. Sailors truly are a different lot.

The mouth got punched off of the Kakita. He seems content to answer plainly with so sign of trouble. "Cut the ropes, if it is faster than untying. Windward side first so they blow away from the ship."

"Good," her attention shifts as it fixes on the confused Asahina, "Narumi-san, what do you do when the a ballista has breached the hull of a ship?"

He looks a bit confused, although to his credit wasn't reacting to the hit that had occurred briefly before.

"I...", she hesitates for a moment to think reeaaallll hard. "If it's anything like a person you leave it in to prevent blood loss, or in this case taking on water. I suppose seal it as best you can to prevent taking on water until proper work ca be done on it?"

... Keeping the roll out of his eyes, Sugita responds softly in the Hare's direction. "Windward is whatever way the wind is coming from at the time Usagi-san."

He nods at that. "So, there's ropes to the sails behind them? Isn't the wind behind us? I'd think we'd just end up having it fall in front of us... hai?"

Postby Kakita Sugita » Sat Sep 03, 2011 2:37 am

The Kakita nods slowly and takes a moment to think how to explain this. "Yes... We might not always be pointed leeward ourselves, but if we are the sails will carry on the wind much faster than the ship will. They'll fly ahead of us into the sea. Especially when there are no sails to pull the ship anymore."

Zenko nods at that. "Hmm... alright. What happens then if its one of the sails on the poles behind others? Do you cut down the ones in front first?"

For someone who had never seen the ocean until about a day over a week ago, and had never grown up hearing stories about ocean traversing ships or sailors, he's making a hearty attempt at least.

"Er..." Sugita rubs at his bruising face. "You know, I've never been on a ship with more than one mast. I suppose you just might have to cut the other sails too. Or find some way of keeping them from getting tangled."
