[Day 1] Early Morning - Discipline (Closed)

[Yoritomo Uminushi]

Uminushi had taken the time to bathe and ritually cleanse himself before seeing to the business of the ship. He sat on the bench beneath the window, reading O-washi's report and sipping from a scalding hot cup of kava. Slowly, the Mantis shook his head. It was times like these that he felt the full weight of his years.

"Well, old man," he mutters to himself, "No rest for the wicked."

He hauled himself off the bench and made his way to the door, telling the ashigaru there to get Daidoji Fuichi for him. The Captain returned to his seat and leaned his head back on the window's high sill, closing his eyes. He rested his elbows on the sill as well as he waited.

[Daidoji Fuichi]

A gentle scratch on the door announces the arrival of Daidoji Fuichi. Serene, he bows in the ancient manner of the Crane i acknowledgment of his new lord. "Blessings of the morning, Taisa, this one is Daidoji Fuichi. I was sent for?"

[Yoritomo Uminushi]

The Mantis was wearing nothing but a pair of fisherman's wrap pants, torso bare and marred by lighter scars. He opens an eye when the Crane enters and makes a dismissive gesture, "Captain while I'm on board. "

"And yes, you were," his smile was friendly enough as the man pushes away from the bench and leans his elbows on his knees. He studies the Daidoji as he continues, "I have reports stating that you and Dageki-san got in to a scuffle. I'd like to hear your version of how things fell out."

[Daidoji Fuichi]

Fuichi nodded, projecting a feeling of utter calm. "It began the night before when, under the temporary influence of the Sea, I dropped a statue of Isora I was carving from the Crow's Nest. It struck Touhi on the head, giving her a concussion. At the time I had lost consciousness, and only learned of the fallout when Isawa-gunso woke me up belowdecks.

The following morning was the medical lesson, during which I was the lead on treating Touhi's concussion. I gave her a recipe for a tea that would help her with energy loss, but learned that she was unable to read and that her brother would help her make it.

That Afternoon, I ventured on deck and discovered Dageki having a small disagreement with two young ladies of the Unicorn. I knew that the situation with his sister was the cause, so I approached in an effort to clear the air. I asked how the tea was working, which he took offense to. He struck me. After that, I focused my chi in the manner of my training so that there would be no more damage, but the act of violence could continue until his anger was exhausted. That seemed to me a better solution than permitting the anger and resentment to fester into something worse.

Unfortunately, Shinjo-san and Iuchi-san did not understand that there was no danger and attempted to intervene, at which point Isawa-gunso arrived."

He bowed on reflex. "That is my testimony, captain."

[Yoritomo Uminushi]

Uminushi listens, absently rubbing his chin. When Fuichi was done with his report, he arches a brow, "Do you wish to make an official grievance report?"

[Daidoji Fuichi]

Fuichi shook his head, his serene expression never changing.
"Of course not. It was as much my fault as his."

[Yoritomo Uminushi]

The Captain nods and makes a gesture towards the side, "Stand there and be quiet."

Uminushi rises from his seat and pops his back with a wince before having the ashigaru bring in Iuchi Rinzuki. While he waits, he picks up his half empty cup and finishes its contents.

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

On her way to the Captain's quarters, Rinzuki pauses to utter a brief prayer to the kami. When she arrives, she scratches at the door and waits to be admitted.

[Yoritomo Uminushi]

"Come in Iuchi-san," he waits until the Unicorn has entered before fixing her with a casual smile, "I'm sure it's obvious what you're here for. Let's hear your side of this mm?"

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

Rinzuki nods her head in understanding as the air kami whisper into the minds of anyone hearing her, twisting her words in the best way possible. "Of course, Yoritomo-sama."

She lowers her gaze as she gathers her thoughts. "I heard shouting on the deck and went to investigate. When I arrived, I found a heimin in an argument with Shinjo Qulan. The heimin insulted the two of us, and I warned him that his behavior had crossed the line and demanded an apology. He refused, and instead chose to insult the two of us once again."

"At this point, Asahina-sama arrived and spoke with the heimin. The heimin struck him, and Asahina-sama told the peasant that he had no intention of fighting, at which point the heimin struck him again. The heimin then insulted me once more and began to come after me in anger, at which point one of the other sailors struck him in an attempt to halt him."

Rinzuki takes a deep breath as she continues. "Shinjo-sama stepped forward to protect the girl when the heimin man turned on her. The man still refused to back down, and Shinjo-sama was forced to wrestle him to the ground like a doshun. At this point, a number of other samurai arrived, including Isawa O-Washi-sama."

She looks as if she were about to say more, but reconsiders and merely bows her head.

[Yoritomo Uminushi]

"And what were the insults specifically...?" comes the casual question as he moves to refill his cup. This was definitely a three cup kava morning.

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

"He insulted my honor in a manner that would have resulted in a duel of honor had he been a samurai. As a heimin, even one of the insults he levied at me would have seen him dead, had he been standing on dry land." She looks down and smooths out the uniform she was wearing. "I have no intention of repeating his crude and vulgar words."

[Yoritomo Uminushi]

Uminushi frowns down at the woman, "That was not a request, Iuchi-san. Perhaps the Unicorn stand for such insubordination in the ranks of the Baraunghar, but you are currently a part of the Imperial Legion and you are also on my ship. And this issue has been brought to my attention for adjudication, which means when I ask after what was said, you will tell me as your commanding officer. Understood?"

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

"The Baraunghar do not order their priests to defile themselves by repeating unclean words," Rinzuki explains in a calm tone. "Nor do they question the testimony of their samurai against a heimin. If I claim that the peasant's words were vile and vulgar, that should be enough to make a decision."

She looks up at him with a stern expression. "If we happen to sail past a tori arch that would allow me to properly purify myself after repeating such unclean words, then I will reconsider my stance. However, I will not sacrifice my spiritual purity at your whim, Yoritomo-sama."

[Yoritomo Uminushi]

The Captain sips from his cup, watching the Iuchi calmly. He arches a brow as she asserts that what Dageki had said had gone past an insult to honor in to blasphemy.

"This is a training vessel, Iuchi-san. There are those who walk aboard this ship biased against their lessers. These samurai require additional training in regards to building tolerance for those beneath them," he starts to explain patiently, but as he continues Uminushi frowns, "I will point out that I have not questioned your testimony. I have asked for details, which is within my right. You have indicated, with your answer, that his deeds went beyond insult and were in fact blasphemous."

He turns to gaze out the window, glancing down once at the tanuki bolted to the sill.

"Do you feel the only means to cleanse both this ship and yourself of the taint of his words and actions is through his death?"

[Iuchi Rinzuki]

"I feel that if the heimin is allowed to live, he will bring further trouble down the line." She lowers her gaze once more. "He clearly has some grudge against those of higher birth than his own, and he has proven that he is unable to control his temper or his mouth. For those reasons, I believe that he should be sent to his next life."

[Yoritomo Uminushi]

"Noted. Stand there," he indicates where he had put the Daidoji, "And be quiet."

Once more the ashigaru was sent to retrieve another of the Half Moon's crew. This time, Shinjo Qulan was called into the Captain's quarters.

[Shinjo Qulan]

Qulan stepped into the Captain's Quarters and bowed politely to the man himself. "You requested my presence, Captain?"

She was, of course, in her Navy-provided clothes.

[Yoritomo Uminushi]

Uminushi turns as Qulan enters and nods once. The frown, at least, was gone though there were no smiles for the Unicorn. "Shinjo-san, could you recount the events of the previous day for me?"

[Shinjo Qulan]

"Hai, Captain." The Shinjo nodded. "I overheard Dageki-san and Furaito-san speaking about an injured girl and I asked if she were alright. Dageki-san yelled at me for showing concern and not knowing her name. Then Iuchi-san said some things and Dageki said more back. One of his outbursts was cut short, thankfully, by Furaito hitting him in the stomach. He was going to punch her, but I intervened because violence might attract... Unpleasant spirits."

The Shinjo girl took a deep breath. "Then Daidoji-san came out and Dageki lost it, punching the Crane. I tried to pull him away, but he slipped from my grip. It took both Furaito and myself to fully restrain him."
