The so-called 'nest' is little more than a platform, reinforced planking that measures only five feet square, pierced by the mainmast. Anchor ropes, meant to be bound about the waists of a watcher in high tied, dangle from the peak of the mast, brilliant red silk braided from seven strands for luck and the blessing of the Fortunes. Some past crewman has lovingly carved a myriad of images into the wood, principle among these being an image of the mighty Suitengu-kami in his aspect as protector of sailors and in the times since, others have added to this theme, though any who do so poorly are sure to draw the most lowly and tedious of duties for the duration of the voyage. Most will be put offships as soon as possible once they return to port for fear of drawing Suitengu's wrath upon the ship that harbored such a fool.
