Orders (Day 2, Mid-Afternoon, OPEN)

Since he was one of the ship's healers, it wasn't at all unusual to see Isawa O-washi's large form moving about the sick bay.
What was unusual, on this particular day, was the solemnity of his expression as he looked for a certain Crane.

Oddly enough, Daidoji Fuichi was not present. The sickbay was set perfectly for reception, but no note nor Crane was in sight.

The big man, not pleased, nonetheless set to work.
With the skiff out searching the wreck, they might just need the things to treat exposure and it was best to prepare now.

Returning from having ducked out for a moment, Nozomi sees the Isawa gathering things and points to a small bucket. "Is-Isawa-gunzo? I th-thought we might need some of these..."
In the bucket are a few gourds of fresh water, a light sheet, a heavy blanket, and a small packet of herbs. There was also a jar of balm for those who had been in the sun too long.
She'd seen the flotsam here and there earlier during the day, and had prepared for certain... possibilities.

Some of the ire left the big man's face at once. "Ah, good to see that one of our healers is up and active, at least. Have you dealt with many victims of exposure before?"

She nods. "I've had s-some, hai. I guess t-technically... I was one o-once. M-my experience wasn't as bad as most..." Milky eyes note the things the man is reaching for and begins to fill in the blanks of what he has left to get.
"Usually an imb-balance of w-water is the biggest c-concern."

He nodded. 'Hai, and madness if too much saltwater's been drunk by the desperate. We'll need restraints in that case for the patient's own good. We'll also have to get cook to make a very light miso as well as balms for any sunburns, or regular burns...some of the flotsam looks a little singed. What else can you think of?"

"That should c-cover the immediate c-concerns. Fresh vegetables, or s-something pickled may be n-necessary afterwards, to help r-restore other humor imbalances..."
She pauses. "If th-there is anyone there, d-do we have a bunk they can s-sleep in after we make sure they're o-ok?"
Lots of rest usually helped and while the Sick bay was definitely... cozy... it wasn't exactly the most comforting place to try and sleep.

"We'd have to move them down with the heimen. We've sailcoth enough to make hammocks if it comes to it." He frowned thoughtfully. "As wrong as it is to hope for death, I hope there's not many to rescue...we can't fit 'em all, even if we spread them across ships."

A certain solemnity falls across her small features. "It all d-depends on how long they've b-been out there. No p-point in worrying until w-we know for sure."

He nodded. 'Hai." Then O-washi forced a smile. "Now, then...how'd you like to learn about the distillery, since your fellow duty shifter's apparently got better things to do then show up and disapprove?"

Nozomi veritably perks up, her enthusasim dimmed by her usual shyness. "Hai, Isawa-gunzo. I b-believe I would enjoy that g-greatly." Her milky eyes glance over what they have prepared, double checking that everything was ready to go at a moment's notice.

"Here, then. We'll start with the treatise on how to make one."
O-washi moved to one of the many cabinets, opened it, and rifled through the scrolls within. After a few moments, he pulled out one in particular and extended it toward his smaller Clanmate.
"I found this in the library at Kyuden Kumiko a few years ago. It took some doing to make the first one but I managed in the end...my notes are appended to the bottom."

Bowing low, she accepts the scroll from him. "Arigato, O-Washi-gunzo."
Her small hands begin to unroll the top part a bit, glancing over the style of writing it was written in. Every scribe had a slightly different "voice" and it was her habit to familiarize herself with it before really digging into the meat of the document. It was something that had saved her from a few misunderstandings when she'd been a beginning student.

The original author, it became swiftly clear, wasn't a scholar. He wrote with great enthusiasm but little organization and hopped from topic to topic like a bee flits through flowers in a field. That he knew his subject was clear but it was a hard thing to follow the steps in logic and many times he had assumed too much knowledge in his readers. Happily, O-washi had added notes about the missing information in the margins.

Nozomi internally sighs at the disorganization of the original writer. Not everyone could have a librarian or scholar on hand to scribe things out for them, and this was obviously one such case. Such things happened often on ships. "Ano... does Isawa-gunzo m-mind if I make a copy of this for my own n-notes?"
