Experiments (Day 7, Morning, Open)

Supaisu was chuckling to herself as she waited for the samurai to come for breakfast. She'd managed to talk some local recipes out of some of the natives and between those and her brand new supplies, she had decided to get creative, throwing in a bit more of the Usagi's spice stash that had been given to her. She'd warn them of course. But it wasn't often a cook with as much experience as she had got to try something new, so she was looking forward to the results either way.

Seiko was about to go on-shift, same as always. She had a lot of work to do, but there was always time to grab a bite to eat. She wasn't much for the gaijin lands, less so than just about anyone else on the ship. But here in the kitchen, everything was safe here, right?

Right?

Cook grins as her first victim... I mean test subject... I mean... customer, arrives. "Kaiu-sama! Arigato for arriving for the morning meal. With new foods to taste I had feared you would all be eating out in the city. I am glad you're here though. I just recently got some new ingredients from Isawa-gunso."

This should have set off warning alarms. The words "new foods" and "new ingredients"... and even being the first one there, for kami's sake! Seiko, oh Seiko, wake up and smell the ninja death waiting in the galley!

"That sounds wonderful, Cook," Seiko replied, pleased that someone was in a good mood this morning, but not quite adding two and two together yet.

She smiled, blissfully unaware of the gastronomical doom that crept ever closer.

Kakita Sugita enters from here grumbling under his breath. That had put him in a foul mood. And since he's bored, may as well get food and see who's around here.Seeing Seiko here does help, but not enough to put a smile on. "Hey folks."

Cook smiled as the Kaiu approached, scooping up a rather nicely sized portion of the rice, which had red and green bits in it that the Kaiu had never seen in rice before, as well as several other new looking vegetables. The meat on display was some sort of native chicken, though it looked much more lambasted in sauce and cooked a bit darker than the cook usually did.

Seiko gave Sugita a short, polite bow of hello before turning back to her... meal? What are these things?

After a moment, Seiko gave a small mental shrug. It was probably just some Mantis cuisine she hadn't tried before, possibly not even something she had even heard of before.

It couldn't possibly be gaijin in origin, right?

Taking her (strange) rice dish and a pair of chopsticks, Seiko gave Cook a quiet murmur of "arigato" before settling herself down to get something to eat. Politely though, she waited for Sugita to join her. It would be rude to ignore him and start eating right away, right?

"What's all this cook? It's not some kind o' trap is it?" Sugita asks playfully.

Cook raised an eyebrow. "Trap? Kakita-sama? That does not seem very kind of you to speak of one who has slaved over your meals for so many weeks diligently and serving you hand and foot with little more than a kernel of rice and the scrapings of tofu and turning it into a meal." She clucks in disappointment, though her eyes are merry.

"Oh ho! I'm suitably chastised ma'am." he replies with a jolly smile. Crew is Crew, Samurai or no. Crew are allowed to pick on him. "Any shellfish in it?" That's become a fairly regular question.

Seiko observed the exchange with amusement, but kept her mouth shut. This was between Sugita and Cook. Best not to interfere.

Cook thought for a moment. "Nah, no shellfish in it. Some new vegetables mostly."

"I'm sure I'll enjoy it." And thankfully not break out in hives. Sugita takes his helping and does join Seiko.

"Here goes nothin'. Ittadakemasu!"

Seiko gave the Crane a polite smile, then she too, starting eating, unaware of the disaster that loomed just in front of them both.

Oooh, that was hot... what were all these little red things in the rice anyway? Red peppers? Those can't be that hot right? I mean, as long as you don't eat them, or eat anything they touched, or smell them, or look at them funny, then you'll be fine! Apparently, whatever the chicken was smothered in, it was fairly hot too, and getting hotter with every bite as the sauce would stick in the mouth.

(... BAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Roll: 6)

Sugita gets through two swallows with a funny face before it hits hard. Then, he spits his third bite onto the plate. "AAAHh! What the fuck is this?! OOGHHGHG! WATER!"

Seiko was a little more controlled. She took a few bites, then calmly put her chopsticks down, folded her hands in her lap, and tried her best not to let Cook know that the food she had just served was eating a hole in her tongue and threatening to take her throat hostage next. Her face flushed and she could feel herself breaking out in a terrible sweat. It took all of her effort to keep calm and not react anymore than that though - and that meant keeping silence.

Cook was very quick to place two rather large glasses of rice water in front of the samurai and then take several steps back, watching both samurai with a bit of caution. "Rice water will help... I think." She murmurs quickly.
