Early Morning - Collecting Orders (Open)

Early Morning - Collecting Orders (Open)

The Jade Sun was nowhere near risen yet. There'd been rope that needed braiding, a little bit of mending on one of the sails and plenty of material to go through and simply make sure it was intact. But, the morning meal now past, it was time for the shift to send someone and collect whatever food was available for the second meal of the shift. Amaya entered while the darkness still clouded the outside world and bowed where necessary, having a glance around while checking for the cook.

The galley was a symphony of sounds as Supaisu worked hard to make the morning meal. As Amaya stepped into the galley she hit a wall of excess heat and the sound of loud humming of an old sailor tune. The galley is mostly dark, but there are several flickering lights within the kitchen area.

She walked up to the cook with a scrip and cleared her throat before giving her a nod, eyes glancing around for where the samurai were. Privately, she was pleased that it was actually quiet so far. It was less of a headache, and it meant that she didn't have to worry about offending one of them. They were definitely... touchy these days.

As Amaya reached the kitchen a second female voice had joined in on the singing, both immediately stopped once she coughed however and she got a nervous look from both Supaisu and the still bandaged Touhi. Once they realized that a samurai had not stumbled upon them they both smiled, though Touhi's was a bit more fragile.

Cook looked the woman over before she got back to work with an assured ability. "What brings you to the kitchen, Amaya-san?" She asked with a smile.

"Ummm, first off, I think I've got somethin f'Touhi if her head's still ringing," she said, offering the concoction that the Shiba had given her to the woman, but avoiding for the moment any mention of where it had come from. She wasn't sure any of the peasants wanted to hear the word samurai these days. "Other'n that, when ya've got second meal ready f'the mornin crew I'm on pickup duty. Smells good."

Touhi smiled some. "Arigato, Amaya. Daidoj... Erm..." She looked down at the ground, looking anxious and worried. "He had somethin' made up for me as well." She reached out to take the offered concoction, sniffing at it carefully once it was in her hands.

Supaisu meanwhile was frowning, but said nothing. Her smile was back by the time she looked to Amaya. "Well we've got it all cooking over there. Should be another few minutes so take a seat and relax for a bit, neh? Haven't had much of a chance to talk with you yet."

"No problem," she said, grabbing a reasonable spot and relaxing into it as the other worked. "And yeah, haven't had much time w'you or the other marines topsides too much. Spent a lotta time catching th'riggings and under decks, gettin a feel for Knots' work. Looks like I'll be w'them for th'most part."

Cook nodded. "Chuckles and Knots and all them are a good bunch. This your first time out on the open sea?"

Touhi was sipping at the medicinal tea carefully, only listening for now as Cook got to talking.

"First time longer'n a day or two," she said, nodding at that. "I've done fishin work on th'open waters, but never for very long. So this's been a bit different, but not too horrid so far. Ship just rocks slower than th'ones I'm used to." She glanced towards Touhi, offering something along the lines of a smile, or at least what her crooked features allowed.

Supaisu chuckled a bit. "I find there are few things nicer in this world than standing out on a deck and seeing nothing but blue around you. Suitengu's Realm has these calm relaxing moments, and the utter dread and adventure of a storm. Storms on open seas still put a chill even in these old sea-drenched bones." Supaisu smiled. "I remember a story about one storm so strong it rolled the sea and the sky around."

Touhi smiled as Supaisu started up again, before offering gently. "Arigato, Amaya. For the thought. Cook-san. Maybe you should look at the food again?"

Distracted from her tale, Supaisu looked back to the fish with a shake of her head and a bit of a grumble that brought a fuller smile to Touhi's lips.

Amaya chuckled as well. "I'll hear th'tale another day, when th'mornin meal's not on th'fire," she promised, letting out just a small chuckle and leaning back a bit. It was pleasant to have a moment or two, and she kept in the back of her mind that the meal wasn't yet being served. This meant that this was a good time to come by if she wanted to avoid people.

"Cook will talk your ear off and fill your head with stories if you let her." Touhi warned with a smile.

Cook snorted a bit. "Stories. Bah. I only tell the truth."

Touhi giggled. "Cook is also notorious for exaggerating."

The annoyed cook pulled a ladle out of her soup pot and pointed it menacingly at the younger ashigaru. "Now see here. I may add a bit here and there, but it adds flavor to the story. You wouldn't want food with no spice would you? Of course not. The same goes with stories." The cook waved her ladle at the woman for a few more moments before sticking it back in the pot and returning to her work.

Touhi had her hands over her mouth to suppress her laughter at the whole experience.

She laughed much more openly and shook her head. "Good storie's half a lie anywho. I don't mind a bitta spice'n the soup. Jus a matter'f when there's time fer it. We're busy bees as is most days, I figure," she said when the small gale finally faded and she looked up at the ceiling. "I've gotta few that're less true'n fiction, like that damned mako I took down 'fore I came out here. That was more luck, but ya won't hear me say that twice."

"Now don't you start too." Cook looked to Amaya, gripping her ladle in a threatening manner. "It's not lying. I might exaggerate in the heat of the moment, but that's all. The stories are still completely true."

Cook moved off to a different pot that was cooking and sniffed gingerly at it. Touhi glanced from Cook to Amaya and grinned. "'xageratin' sound a lot like lyin' ta me. But she's a real good storyteller when she gets in the mood to."

"I'll bet," she said with a smirk and a barked laugh, relaxing and looking around the cabin. "I'll have t'remember t'come back here on an off hour'r two, jus so's I have somewhere t'talk that ain't th'hold. It gets all kindsa cramped in there most days."

Touhi smiled and nodded. "Hai, the hold can get pretty crowded sometimes. But since most of us 're on duty it usually ain't too bad."

Cook meanwhile looked back at Amaya with the look a supervisor gives an employee when they just found that employee being lazy. "Oh we don't sit about around here. I worked a man to death once you know. Carried so much water his hands fell off."

Touhi giggled. "That just plain ain't true. Happy was fine, though I guess he did have trouble carryin' a spear for a few days after that..."

Cook mock glared at the younger Ashigaru woman before turning her gaze to Amaya. "Don't suppose you're any good in a kitchen."

"Not if'n ya actually want me t'cook," she said, shaking her head. "I can handle th'real basics, but that's stuff like carryin th'water n such. I'm better't catchin certain kindsa fishies for ya than I am at actually fishin. Mostly a tailor n scout most days."

Cook sighed. "Of course not. Just gonna have samurai waltzing about my kitchen like they own the place. Gonna mess things up and then it'll be up to me to clean all of their mess up." She slowly shook her head and pulled a pot off the stove.

"There. Now give it a few minutes to cool down before you take it to the others."

"sounds like a plan t'me," she said, nodding at the pot to indicate which of the two aspects she had in her mind as she said that. "Kinda hard t'avoid those samurai round here. Not like home, where I saw mebbe three r four of em most'f the time. Was mostly outta the way."

"Ya get used to it, mostly." Touhi pipes in. "Though sometimes they can..." Her face suddenly pales a bit and she trails off, curling up a little into a ball as she wraps her arms around her knees.

Cook immediately goes over and pats the woman on the back. "Shush now. They'll get theirs when they're judged for their actions in this life just as we all will." She smiled a bit. "Now why don't you go stir the rice for a bit, neh?"

Cook quickly returned to Amaya as the sullen woman moved over to one of the pots and started stirring it.

"Dageki's Sister" Cook whispered to Amaya, hoping that would explain at least most of what was going on. "Captain's deciding his fate now."
