Early Evening 4 - What the Hell is this Place?

Amaya, having literally no interest in these Bromen or whatever they were, was nevertheless more than slightly curious about what the buildings were. Hands folded at her waist, she took a moment away from being around the others to have a look around the outside of the temples. If one could be any more like a gawking tourist... it would take work.

These were clearly Temples...they had idols (though the Fortunes, if that was what they were, were possessed of far too many arms) and shrines and praying monk-like folks just like back home. Even to Amaya, despite being used to Crane aesthetics, could tell these were the finest structures in the city, no expense spared in their crafting. Every inch of the structures and their grounds were tended, right down to exotic topiarys that graced several of the establishments.

Amaya's presence drew very little attention...the people here had more important things to worry over than one more person in slightly outlandish clothes.

Fully intending on visiting the entire city in just a few days, Choukichi's wandering brings him to the temple district to see if it is just as extravagant as he had heard. Not far from Amaya he stands looking not quite in awe, but certainly very impressed. When he spots Amaya and recognizes her from the ship he offers a polite nod.

A rigid salute is the reply as soon as Amaya recognizes the Yoritomo is present. "O-Samurai-sama," she said, recognizing them not by name but from the ship. She didn't remember names unless she needed to do so, and she hadn't yet. She looked up at the temples and frowned, visibly perturbed.

"what's wrong w'proper fortunes?"

Choukichi moves over to her and responds quietly enough that any gaijin who do understand Rokugani would have to be close to hear him.

"The heavens do not bless them as they do us, their favored children, so the gaijin turn to false gods to ask for blessings."

"Bah. Blessed, cursed, ignored, ya pray t'the ones that're in charge," she muttered and shook her head. "You know much bout this sorta stuff they worship? They jus statues what don't do much, r somethin worse, O-samurai-sama?" She seemed ... concerned about the concept of the fact that these people seemed to be worshipping things with many arms. After all... Kyoso...

"No, not much. I believe they are more than just statues, but I know little of what their 'gods' are capable of, or what any of their names or aspects are. Those who told me about this kingdom did not care much about their religion."

She nodded and rubbed her chin a little, stepping back from them. "I think, mebbe, I've seen 'nuff of this place, less I need t'deal with somethin here," she said, taking another step. "Did O-Samurai-sama need somethin from this places... r me?"

It was clear that the buildings made her intensely uncomfortable. She didn't seem very interested in actually entering them and was looking furtively at the roads leading back to other parts of town. Crowds at least she understood.

"No, I was just taking a look to see if the temples were as extravagant as I was told... and they are. What brought you to the temple district?"

While he talks, Choukichi motions down the street away from the temple and starts walking.

"Figurin out what' th'hell's around here. Not exactly sure where anythin's around this place, an figured it'd be a good idea to at least know what this thing was," she replied, shaking her head while following his motion and walking along. "Jus gettin bearings around here's not always easy, an I'm still kinda groggy coming off'f night shifts for th'moment."

"Hai, it is a big city, and with so many people cramming the streets it's proving hard to get to know the way around. How has the night shift been going, you are new to the ship as well correct?"

"As new's most of th'samurai crew, yes," she said. "Evenin shifts're jus bout the same as any other. Jus a matter'f getting th'sleep schedule set right, an then it's all the same. Darker when yer workin, but not any harder'n daytime shifts."

Choukichi nods his head.

"Where did you serve before being assigned to the Half Moon?"

"Crane lands," she replied as they walked among the various stalls. She gave a little duck to avoid one of the various low hangings and the people thronging in the area and muttered something about the crowds. Looking over a street towards the harbor.

"Mostly fishin work, small sampan jus off th'coast. Been sailin all m'life."

Choukichi walks along eaily enough, the large crowd not bothering him too much.

"Must be a big change going from fishing and small sampan to a sengo kobune?"

"It don't pitch as often, but th'pitchin's a lot bigger most times. Lots more folks'n it, an most of 'em samurai. I've talked t'more samurai in th'last week than I ever did 'fore this," she said, shrugging and grunting. "It takes some gettin used to."

She stepped nimbly to the side and put on a fierce looking scowl. As she did this, several people ducked out of the way and she settled into a more natural walk, grunting again. "Damned scars have a use."

Choukichi glances over and looks over her scars a bit more carefully trying to determine what caused them.

"Indeed, toss a proper scowl on there and you would look positively frightening."

The growl she gave made whatever it was under her eye pucker nastily. It did a good job of further spreading the locals. "S'pose so," she said with a dark laugh. Whatver it was that got her, it looked like a lot of claw and teeth marks more than anything else. None of the gashes, for all the many she had sported over the years, looked like blade wounds. Instead, there was the feel that things had tried to eat her.

"If'n ya don' mind m'askin, ya one of those sailin types too, O-samurai-sama?"

Though curious about the scars he doesn't ask further.

"Born at sea, raised at sea, trained at sea and so on."

"Most'f th'Mantis mus be like that. Don'tcha not really have lands on th'mainland anywho, out in th'islands and what not?" she asked, making a note that this one didn't seem to mind stupid questions. It was good to know which ones were safe to querry.
