A high white-washed wall and a pair of heavy, wooden gates protects the compound and its occupants from prying eyes. Two carved foo-dogs sit protectively on either side of the gate (large enough to admit an elephant) while a guard is posted on the smaller door inside the gate leading in to a broad, paved courtyard.
Here, behind the walls, lies a garden familiar in its tranquil design, if not in plant life. There's a riot of color, flowers blossoming on stems and vines, and shedding their scent in to the air. Fountains and shallow pools take the place of more 'natural' ponds and streams, murmuring softly to themselves. Three two-story building sits in gaijin splendor around the perimeter of the courtyard. Arched windows, with carved screens and stripe-painted sills, look out on the courtyard while a balcony on the second-floor allows for a good view of the garden and the bustling street outside. It looked just like any of its neighbors.
